Types of braces for adults
Not long ago, metal bracket-and-wire braces were the primary method for correcting orthodontic issues, but now, adults have more options than ever before when it comes to straightening their teeth.
- Metal braces: The mainstay in orthodontic treatment for many decades, metal braces use a set of strategically placed brackets and wires on the teeth that exert forces on your teeth to move them into the proper position. While they are a very effective treatment option, particularly for cases of severe misalignment, crowding, or bite issues, metal braces are highly visible in your smile, limit what you are able to eat and how you are able to clean your teeth, and can cause discomfort due to the brackets and wires poking your mouth.
- Invisible braces for adults: These work similarly to traditional braces, but rather than using silver metal braces, tooth-colored brackets and wires are used instead for a more discreet option that is less visible in your smile.
- Invisalign® clear aligners: A truly revolutionary method of straightening teeth and fixing bite issues, Invisalign therapy uses a series of clear aligners that gradually shift your teeth into their optimal position. The BPA-free, clear aligners are fully removable so you can effectively clean your teeth and eat whatever you’d like. Patients are advised to wear the aligners for at least 22 hours a day for the best results, and the average treatment time is about 12 months.

Straight teeth for a healthy smile
Having straight teeth does more than just enhance the appearance of your smile. When your teeth are straight, extraneous forces on the biting surfaces and sensitive temporomandibular joints is reduced, which leads to less wear and tear on your teeth and reduces pain from issues such as TMJ disorder. In addition, when your teeth are straight, you can more easily clean all of their surfaces with brushing and flossing for better overall oral health.
