Treatment starts with an evaluation. Dr. Worful determines if your tooth can be restored with a crown or another type of restorative treatment. Crowns may be appropriate if your tooth has:
- Large areas of decay
- Extensive wear
- Fractures or broken-off pieces
- Stubborn discoloration, poor contours, or an uneven size
Crowns also protect root canal-treated teeth. They support large fillings that have little remaining tooth structure. They’re used to anchor dental bridges, and to cover implants for tooth replacement.
If a crown is the best option for you, generally Dr. Worful prepares the natural tooth. Damaged areas are removed. The tooth is also reduced. So, the porcelain dental crown fits over the tooth precisely. Impressions or models of your treated tooth are taken. A temporary crown may be placed to protect the prepared tooth. The impression is used by our professional lab partners to make your permanent crown.
Once the crown is complete and arrives at Alpharetta Smile Care, you’ll return to our office. We will remove the temporary. The permanent crown is placed. Any necessary adjustments are made before the crown is securely “fixed” to the natural tooth. Then you’re on your way!

Restored teeth should be treated like natural teeth (with Tender Loving Care). During your consultation, we’ll discuss ways to keep porcelain crowns looking, feeling, and functioning at their healthy best. This may involve customizing a night-guard or oral appliance to protect your teeth from bruxism (teeth-grinding). Dr. Worful may notice the telltale signs of bruxism, which include fractures and other types of damage (that porcelain restorations correct).
